Steaua Bucharest hold Dynamo Kiev
Steaua Bucharest came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Dynamo Kiev at home in Group E of the Champions League on Tuesday. Florian Cernat put the visitors ahead with a 29th minute free-kick while Nicolae Dica equalised for the hosts on 69 minutes.
The result means that Steaua Bucharest qualify for the next round of the UEFA Cup as even though they only lead Dynamo by three points with one match remaining, the 4-1 win in Kiev gives the Romanians a superior head-to-head.
Steaua started the better of the two sides with two chances in quick succession when Dica and Daniel Oprita went close on six and seven minutes.
Ayila Yussuf should have put the visitors ahead just afterwards though, somehow poking wide at the far post after Cornel Cernea flapped at a Valentin Belkevich corner.
It was a frantic opening, although the pace was matched by nerves with a place in the UEFA Cup at stake, nerves displayed by Oprita who fired high and wide when clean through on nine minutes.
Maxim Shatskikh sent a rasping effort into the side-netting after bursting into the box on 25 minutes, and his side took the lead four minutes later when "Flo" Cernat sent a right wing free kick towards Brazilian forward Kleber, his run wrong-footing the Steaua defence and the ball spinning into the bottom left after the bounce.
Oprica had yet another superb chance when put one-on-one with Shovkovksiy, but the Ukraine goalkeeper made himself big and deflected the finish behind for a corner.
The second half saw more opportunities for both sides, Yussuf with a long range effort for Dynamo forcing a good stop by Cernea while Kleber was put through on goal but could not control and allowed the hosts to clear, Dica and Stancu with good efforts for Steaua.
Dynamo thought they had gone 2-0 up after a goalmouth scramble at a corner, but the referee's assistant flagged for a high boot from Kleber on Goian in the build-up.
It was then left for Steaua to equalise and effectively end the tie for Dynamo, Dica's shot from the edge of the box taking a wicked deflection off Rodrigo and looping over the stranded Shovkovskiy into the back of the net.
The visitors had another goal disallowed, Shatskikh's header into the bottom corner somewhat harshly discounted as it appeared that Rodrigo and not he was in an offside position when the ball reached him at the far post, while Steaua really should have won it when Banel Nicolita's diving 86th clipe header from an inch-perfect Stancu centre skewed harmlessly into the ground.
But with Dynamo needing to win by four clear goals anyway the result had become irrelevant by this point, Dynamo's poor season in Europe over and Steaua earning themselves a bite at UEFA Cup glory.

Lyon win Group E
Real Madrid came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Lyon in an entertaining Champions League Group E clash at the Bernabeu on Tuesday. Lyon win Group E. John Carew and Florent Malouda put the visitors 2-0 up within 31 minutes, but Mahamadou Diarra and Ruud van Nistelrooy pulled Real level.
Gregory Coupet in the Lyon goal saved a controversial 89th clipe Van Nistelrooy penalty to deny the hosts a win.
The result means Lyon top Grpup 3 with 13 points and a superior head-to-head over Real, who also qualify with one match remaining.
Lyon took an early lead on 11 minutes when Malouda cut in from the left to feed the excellent Carew in the middle, who rode a terrible attempt at a tackle from Roberto Carlos and held off weak challenges from Sergio Ramos and Ivan Helguera to toe-poke past Iker Casillas from the edge of the box.
The move set a pattern for much of the first half - Real dominating possession without really threatening Gregory Coupet's goal, while Lyon used their pace and power on the left to overcome the lightweight Jose Antonio Reyes and out of sorts Ramos to create problem after problem for the hosts.
Raul forced a good save with a looping header after the quarter hour, while Carew put Tiago through after an almost carbon copy move to the opening goal but he could not get the shot away and Real survived.
Juninho went close with a long-range effort on 25 minutes, while Carew again gave Real the jitters when Roberto Carlos missed another tackle in the box although Ramos got back in time to save the day for Real.
Lyon made it 2-0 just after the half-hour after Fabio Cannavaro pulled down Carew on the right, Juninho's lethal delivery from the subsequent free-kick catching the Real defence flat-footed and allowing Malouda to get between Ramos and Casillas with a deft finish.
Real did manage to pull one back seven minutes later, a Reyes corner sent back across goal by Ruud Van Nistelrooy wreaking havoc and allowing Mahamadou Diarra to dive in and head into the top right.
There was controversy before the break when Lyon tried to claim a penalty although Carew clearly dived when Ramos and Helguera flanked him in the box, the argument continuing down the tunnel with Helguera.
Ramos almost equalised five minutes after the break when he latched onto a Roberto Carlos free-kick at the far post only to see his shot blocked for a corner.
Real were really starting to come back at Lyon, and the off-colour Robinho was given a gilt-edged chance to level things before the hour when an ingenious Van Nistelrooy flick put him in, but the Brazil star slipped as he shaped to shoot and fired well over.
Malouda could have got his second and Lyon's third when he expertly controlled a long pass to turn Ramos and shoot on goal but his effort flew high of Casillas' cross bar, while the all-action but off-target Ramos headed yards over with the goal at his mercy after a glorious 81st minute Reyes dead-ball.
But the excellent Van Nistelrooy pulled Real level with the simplest of tap-ins two minutes later, finishing from two inches after a superb Raul header cannoned off the inside the post and trickled across the goal line to the grateful Dutchman.
It was almost Real's night when Brazil defender Cris was rather unfortunately adjudged to have fouled Van Nistelrooy in the area right at the death, but the former Manchester United star's low drilled effort saw Coupet pull off a heroic stop to save Lyon from what would have a been a harsh defeat.
There was even more late drama when a mass brawl erupted after Malouda fouled Reyes and Ramos reacted, an incident that should have ultimately seen Ramos sent-off as referee Terje Hauge incorrectly booked Raul after the melee, allowing Ramos to get away with a nasty revenge challenge minutes later that should have seen a red card shown.
